Step 1: Hair
Chlorine and toxins in shower water make our hair dry and brittle.
Shower water is an essential factor for your hair and skin's appearance, shine and health. The dermis and hair absorb chlorine, heavy metals such as nickel or copper and other toxins that are released through the shower head.
So, ask yourself: How much time and money do you invest in taking care of your skin and especially your hair? Do you use a body moisturiser, do you use a hair shampoo, should it be free of sulphates and silicones, do you use a conditioner, mask, oil, heat protector, anti-hair loss treatments, vitamins... An infinite amount of care, yes, but you are still washing your hair with chlorine, trihalomethanes, heavy metals and other toxins.

Chlorine and trihalomethanes
The chlorine and trihalomethanes we absorb in our showers significantly damage and dry out our skin, hair and intestinal flora.
The heat and steam from the water opens the pores causing a high rate of absorption of chlorine and other chemicals into the skin and hair.
They also oxidise the hair, causing colours to fade faster, shades to yellow and lose their shine.
Heavy metals
Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium or nickel, which are carried by pipes, are absorbed by our hair and reach our bloodstream through our skin without any kind of filter.
They accumulate inside the hair fibres.
According to several studies carried out by L'Oréal, an acclaimed brand with more than one hundred and ten years of experience and a world reference in hair care and cosmetic products, 17% of French people and 8% of Danish and Germans have more than 50 ppm of metals embedded in their hair fibre. The most alarming thing is that 58% of Spanish people have more than 50 ppm of metals embedded in their hair fibre.
Excess lime
Some minerals, such as calcium, copper or iron, can affect our hair if they accumulate over a long period of time. Excess minerals in water cause what is commonly known as limescale. These obstruct the follicle's opening and cause it to detach. If it covers the follicle, it blocks its growth and also blocks the cuticle. This then prevents the follicle from opening and allowing the colour, conditioner, and protein to penetrate the hair... Limescale also causes dandruff and accumulates in the hair, making it dry and heavy.
This excess is important to reduce, but always in an environmentally friendly way. Most filters on the market remove this limescale by adding ion-exchange resin beads, synthetic gel spheres derived from petroleum (benzene and styrene) that exchange particular ions for other ions. These resins are toxic. In addition, the heat and steam from the shower cause the pores to open up and absorb up to 20 times more substances than when cold, so the toxicity of these resins is multiplied dramatically.

At Alkanatur we analyzed and compiled the main causes that affect skin and hair health and how to deal with them.

Most filters on the market use a filter product called calcium sulphite (also called E226 additive). This product is a synthetic derivative created from the combustion of sulphur-containing minerals and although it is used in small quantities in foodstuffs, it is highly toxic in frequent contact with foodstuffs.
Other very common filters are those containing KDF, which contain minerals such as copper and zinc, which cause these minerals to settle on our hair and are absorbed by its fibres. These dry and oxidise the hair, dulling its shine and colour, and even causing breakage.
Alkanatur rejects chemicals. Our filters are based on a completely natural product such as coconut activated carbon, 100% free of calcium sulphite E226 and certified by the University of Vigo. See certificates here.
To remove even more residues, metals and bad odours, we use two more layers of filters: a layer of cotton and another layer with deoxidation particles.
In this way we obtain high quality water, 99% chlorine free, without impurities or organic matter.

Fights inflammation and hair loss
The scalp also suffers from inflammation and this is closely linked to hair loss.

Similarities and differences between the 2 Alkanatur shower filters
Filtration
In terms of filtration, the shower filters are the same. Both remove the same toxins: chlorine, metals,... They differ in design, lifetime of litres and replacements.
Duration
30,000 litre model: lasts approximately 5/6 months (general customer average) and when it is finished, it is thrown away and a new one is bought. 50,000 litre model: lasts between 10 and 12 months. When it is finished, only the inner part has to be replaced, the outer casing is reused. Spare parts cost €39.95, so in the end it is much more economical than the smaller model.

Replacement parts
Only the 50,000 litre model is replaceable. The complete internal filter is replaced after 50,000 litres ( it includes a chlorine reagent to measure the filtration level). The pre-filter has to be changed halfway through its service life (approx. 5/6 months) or if it detects a blockage or drop in pressure. For more info click here
