Types of water and their effects on health

What type of water do you consume? Depending on the answer, this can have positive or negative effects on your health.

Although water is the quintessential foodstuff, we rarely stop to think about what type of water we are consuming.

When it comes to shopping, most consumers pay attention to what kind of food we are buying. We look at where it comes from, its composition, whether it is organic or not... And, of course, what it is going to cost us. However, when it comes to water consumption, we have three types of consumers: those who drink water directly from the tap without worrying about anything else, those who filter it or those who buy bottled water and buy the brand they like according to its taste or how much it costs.

Three ways of consumption

Bottled water

The fact that bottled water is not an environmentally friendly, economical or safe option is not a myth. It is a reality. The massive waste generated by single-use plastics is of increasing concern. The economic cost is high. The idea is hard to imagine when we buy just one bottle, but how many bottles do we buy per month? And per year? Let's do the math.

And finally: its materials. All bottles contain hormone pollutants (endocrine disruptors).

This was demonstrated in the bottled water analysis published in Environment International, carried out by the Institute of Biosanitary Research of Granada in 2015. The lab analysed the hormonal activity of 29 samples of bottled water marketed in Spain, with different sources of origin and impeccably marketed as "natural mineral water". The results showed that they all had hormonal action. You can read more about the study published by the IBS in Granada by clicking here.

Here is a short video that raises awareness about the migration of microplastics into our water, the so-called "cocktail effect".

Tap water

We assume that water potability is a guarantee of water quality. And in part it is, but because of its circumstances.

The chlorine in tap water is a necessary evil that assures us that the water, despite having travelled kilometres, will reach our homes safely. The problem is the effect that chlorine can have on our bodies in a repeated and medium to long term consumption. It must also be pointed out that along the way, the water absorbs other substances, such as heavy metals, bacteria, microplastics... Therefore, we must filter out these toxic substances to ensure that the water is of high quality and totally safe for daily consumption.

Filtered water

The solution to healthy, toxin-free tap water is purification.

The lesser-known option: filtered, alkaline, antioxidant water

In addition to purification, another important property of water is its pH level, which indicates its degree of acidity or alkalinity. As the word itself indicates, the term "acidity" does not sound very appealing, but it often sounds confusing when talking about pH. Determining the acidity of a food through its sensation on the palate is one thing, but determining the acidifying or alkalising action it can have on the body is quite another..

An ultra-processed sweet is going to be acidifying for our body even if it tastes sweet. On the other hand, a spinach salad will taste acidic on the palate, but its alkalising power is high.

As we already know, our body is prone to acidification due to factors such as age, pollution, stress, lack of rest... And it is important to counteract this acidification in order, in the words of Doctor Domingo Pérez León, to maintain good health thanks to the acid-base balance.

Scientific research on water

We believe that it is our duty to research and innovate in everything that has a direct positive impact on our wellbeing.

On a daily basis, research is being carried out on food, especially solid foods, and water remains largely overshadowed. As we said at the beginning of this article, water is our most fundamental food. To quote Dr Monsalve, "The vital importance of good water for our health".

Dr. María Monsalve, CSIC scientist, group leader and researcher, comments that the studies carried out on Alkanatur filtered water suggest a change, an improvement, in vascular function that plays an important role in tumour development processes - as observed in the preclinical study - and especially in the metastasis process.

A second study on arterial hypertension revealed positive results on both vasculature and inflammation of the blood vessels. Based on the results obtained, researchers began to investigate the effect of consuming Alkanatur alkaline filtered water on intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis of the microbiome, which occurs in association with obesity.

It's not just about drinking water, it's about drinking good water. What about you, what kind of water do you drink?
