Magnesium. Why it is so important and how to consume it

This mineral is necessary for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, and scientific research shows that a large part of society is lacking in this mineral.

Magnesium is a mineral found in our diet and is essential for maintaining good health. Even so, there are still many people who suffer from a deficiency of this mineral in their daily nutrition.

The scientific study ANIBES, coordinated by Gregorio Varela-Moreiras, president of the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN) was conducted on the intake of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D in the Spanish population and assessed its compliance with national and international recommendations. The study found that a significant percentage of the population does not meet these recommendations for calcium, vitamin D and especially magnesium intake. (Read the press release of the study here).

Why is it important?

Because it is a mineral. It is a natural substance present in food, which makes it necessary for our survival.

Throughout the evolution of the human race, humans have survived for millions of years because of their diet. 2.6 million years ago, humanity still based its entire diet on vegetable sources, rich in minerals.

Our lifestyle and diet have changed both quantitatively and qualitatively over the last few centuries, especially during the last century.

Time is the most valuable immaterial commodity in our society and this has a general impact on everything, including on foodstuffs. Food has mutated to adapt to contemporary needs.

The companies that supply us with food seek to increase their income as quickly and efficiently as possible, which is why they alter crops to increase growth and production. The hurried and unnatural conditions imposed on these foodstuffs result in food lacking in minerals. This is why Swiss chard from a supermarket chain does not have the same properties as the one planted by a small farmer who waits and respects the timing of each individual species.

This is only a small part of our food chain.

The therapeutic power of magnesium

Scientific evidence has demonstrated the magnitude of this mineral in the general well-being of people. But its therapeutic potential can be used for many ailments, from migraines to constipation or even as an antacid.

How should it be consumed?

Supplements

Magnesium supplements are increasingly popular, but many people are taking them in the wrong way.

Supplements, as their name suggests, serve to complete, increase or reinforce something in some aspect. They are not meant to be a substitute for anything. The regular consumption of magnesium supplements is not advisable, since the most natural and healthy way is to consume this mineral as it is found naturally.

Time is the most valuable immaterial commodity in our society and this has a general impact on everything, including on foodstuffs. Food has mutated to adapt to contemporary needs.

Solid foods

A simple and natural way to obtain it is through what we eat. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans and green leafy vegetables are very potent sources.

Water

Water in nature is composed of dissolved minerals. The most natural water is the one with calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium...

Nowadays it is difficult to have access to pure, natural water. The pipes that supply hundreds of thousands of people with water require the use of chemicals to eradicate any bacteria or foreign organisms that we might ingest.

Bottled water is not a healthy alternative either, as it contains endocrine disruptors (small plastics) that migrate into the water, are absorbed into our bodies and can affect our hormone system.

The most economical and environmentally friendly solution is to filter our tap water to remove the added chemicals while still making the most of the natural minerals it contains.

Why consume it in water?

As the universal solvent, water is the food with the greatest penetrating power into the cells. Magnesium-rich alkaline water is one of nature's greatest nutrient carriers.

What are the benefits of magnesium-rich alkaline water?

At Alkanatur we are experts in magnesium-rich alkaline water. We add 18mg of magnesium to every litre of water filtered with our equipment. This mineral has been proven to be important not only in our food, but also in our glasses.

It improves heartburn and acid reflux.

The Voice Institute of New York studied the effects of these in vitro studies to determine whether artesian well water, which contains natural bicarbonates (pH 8.8), could irreversibly denature (inactivate) human pepsin related to reflux and heartburn problems and establish its potential as a buffer for treating patients with oesophageal reflux. The results suggested that alkaline water may be a useful and safe supplementary treatment for reflux disease. (Read study)

Prevention of diseases caused by viruses and bacteria

In 2020 the University of Kansas published a study in ScienceDaily suggesting that a low pH in the digestive tract may enhance the damaging effect of viruses and bacteria in our bodies. These findings may have implications for helping to address the antibiotic resistance crisis in bacterial infections around the world. (Read study)

Gallstones or kidney stones: lithiasis

The Puigvert Foundation (Urology Unit) explains in a pioneer study on lithiasis (gallstones or kidney stones) how this pathology can be prevented and improved by drinking sodium-free alkaline water rich in calcium and magnesium (Read study)

Hypertension

A pre-clinical study led by Dr. María Monsalve, Senior Scientist CSIC Head of the Research Group of the Institute of Biomedical Research ‘Sols-Morreale’ IIBm (CSIC-UAM) Superior Council for Scientific Research - Autonomous University of Madrid on the evaluation of the potential beneficial effects of Alkanatur alkaline ionised water on arterial hypertension, where a significant improvement in vascular response was observed (Read study)

The therapeutic power of ionised alkaline water has been used and researched for years. This practice originated in the East, and in Japan it has been a very valuable and popular resource for decades. It is even used in hospitals throughout the country.
